Validation of a fault tree associated with mechanical hazards during interventions in the danger zone of printing presses

Abstract

Wanting to establish a safe procedure for interventions in printing press danger zones, which consist of many nip points, the Association sectorielle paritaire (ASP, joint sector-based association) printing and related activities, identified the safest practices for carrying out these interventions. The fault tree method, tested in 25 companies in this sector, proved conclusive. The ASP therefore called on the IRSST’s expertise to complete, improve and validate it, mainly with respect to the three following operations: roller and blanket washing; printing plate insertion, and paper feeding and threading. Dissemination of the validated fault tree, as well as a risk evaluation method in the sector’s industries, will help reduce mechanical accidents for workers who carry out interventions on printing presses.
