Abstract

A 2005 study demonstrated the scope of the health problems of 9-1-1 emergency call centre dispatchers, namely a high rate of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and psychological health problems (PsyHPs) as well as physical and psychosocial risk factors. The researchers will now contribute to the projects of five emergency centres and the Association paritaire du secteur affaires municipales (APSAM, joint sectoral occupational health and safety association, municipal affairs sector) whose aim is to reduce the prevalence of these health problems. In addition to facilitating the understanding of the processes to regulate the physical and mental load corresponding to the risk factors involved, the scientists’ contribution will be to identify the conditions that promote or limit MSDs and PsyHPs in these workplaces. The result will be preventive measures adapted to their specific problem. The intervention model thus created can then be transposed to other activity sectors, including public safety, ambulance and call centres.
