Development and validation of an early screening questionnaire on chronic disability related to low back pain

Abstract

While chronic disability related to low back pain affects a small percentage of workers, it produces major costs, both human and financial. Once established, this complex phenomenon requires costly multidisciplinary interventions. The authors of this report have developed a new early detection questionnaire for chronic disability related to low back pain, based on a conceptual model resulting from a previous study, and have validated it with low back pain workers on disability. At the time this study was undertaken in 2004, only two detection questionnaires had been published and had non-negligible limits.

The authors consider that their questionnaire is reliable and valid, and that it could prove to be an effective tool for identifying compensated workers in the subacute phase of pain who are likely to experience a prolonged disability situation. However, other studies are necessary, in their opinion, to better establish the clinical usefulness of this tool. Ultimately, it could mainly serve frontline practitioners for identifying the individuals in question and for adapting intervention methods as a result, as well as for using existing resources in this area in a more efficient way.
