Characterization of the «exposure – biological exposure indicator» relationship for n-hexane

Abstract

The documentation and quantification of the main factors likely to affect contaminant-exposure biological monitoring data raised the question of the precise relationship that exists between exposure to n-hexane (n-HEX) and the urinary excretion of 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) in workers exposed to this solvent. Until just recently, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) questioned the use of the biological exposure indicator reference value, total urinary 2,5-HD, which has been used for many years. The authors carried out experimental verifications on volunteers under controlled laboratory conditions to obtain an exact description of the “Exposure to n HEX - Excretion of 2,5-HD” relationship. Their work generated essential data for the biological monitoring of n-HEX exposure, resulted in the development of a method for determining free 2,5-HD, and confirmed the relevance of the new indicator (free urinary 2,5-HD) proposed by the ACGIH, thus ensuring a more judicious monitoring of worker exposure.
