Optimization and validation of a tool for selecting protective gloves resistant to single solvents and mixtures of solvents and preparation of a selection guide

Abstract

Skin contact with some chemicals can cause burns, dermatitis and intoxication. The CSST has compiled 5,108 cases of this type from 1998 and 2002. However, even if workers wear gloves for protection, their resistance is limited by the type of constituent polymer, and by the type of solvent handled. The resistance may also decrease if a mixture of solvents is involved. The aim of this study is to optimize and validate the GANTEX protective glove selection tool currently being developed, to extend its application to additional combinations of solvents, and to develop a glove selection guide. Once its results are posted on the IRSST’s Web site, occupational health and safety practitioners will have a user-friendly tool and a guide that will help them select the best skin protection equipment for reducing the risks attributable to chemical attack.
