The influence of health and safety in the construction and transmission of professional knowledge: the case of a workplace mentoring programme among machine-tool operators and cooks

Experienced workers are victims of fewer accidents than their younger coworkers. This fact confirms that the learning of a trade is a long process, combining formal and practical training, during which the worker gradually learns effective occupational health and safety strategies. This study, carried out as part of an Emploi Québec coaching program for machine tool operators and cooks, identified the factors (mainly organizational ones) that promote or hamper the transmission of occupational knowledge, allowing a better understanding of this transfer’s effects on occupational health and safety. A joint sector-based association (the Association des manufacturiers), Emploi Québec and several workplaces participated in this study.
