Fall protection for high-steel workers

The first phase of this research comprised on-site observation of workers engaged in steel frameworking, a job whose work environment renders the use of conventional fall-arrest devices difficult. An inventory of available fall-arrest equipment was then prepared, and the suitability of each for use by frameworkers assessed.

Although most of the equipment currently available was suitable for use by frameworkers, the modification, and in some cases the redesign, of some equipment was recommended. The use of equipment which requires the least amount of active intervention by workers was recommended, since this reduces the potential for error. At the request of those responsible for occupational health and safety, including companies, the IRSST has furnished expertise in this area and contributed to the implementation of solutions at a number of construction sites. In addition, the study’s recommendations have been adopted by a sub-committee of the committee responsible for the review of the construction safety code.
