Creation and evaluation of an ergonomic intervention programme for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders at the task-design stage

Abstract

Over the last few years, the IRSST’s ergonomists have become interested in participatory ergonomics, an approach that is based on the capacity of the members of a company to take action on hazardous work situations. This joint research between the IRSST and Laval University deals with the implementation of an intervention program to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in two metallurgical plants. Ergo groups consisting of operator employees and managers were created. After receiving training in work analysis, these workers diagnosed some risk factors in their environment, and then proposed transformation projects in which they participated. The report presents the evolution in the nine work situations analyzed, eight of which were changed. At the end of the report, the researchers discuss factors that promote a conversion project being carried out. They also make recommendations to improve the implementation of such an intervention program and suggest new avenues for research.
