Adaptation and validation of a handling harness for ambulance workers

Abstract

Constrained working quarters, heavy loads and awkward postures make ambulance technicians' work difficult. Between 1988 and 1990, 54% of the CSST-compensated accidents involving ambulance technicians involved back injuries. In order to prevent such injuries, a carry harness was designed specifically for ambulance work and subjected to a two-stage evaluation. The biomechanical advantages of the harness prototype are its reduction of asymmetrical loading and exertion of both the back extensors and wrist flexors. The results obtained in the laboratory were confirmed during field trials, and the seven teams of ambulance technicians who participated in the trials were prepared to continue using it, especially for the transportation of patients on stairs.
