    <title>The IRSST contributes to international discussions on OHS research at Sheffield Group and PEROSH events </title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3381/the-irsst-contributes-to-international-discussions-on-ohs-research-at-sheffield-group-and-perosh-events</link>
    <description>This year the IRSST participated in the work of the Sheffield Group, an international network of occupational health and safety (OHS) research facilities. The Institute was represented by its president-CEO, Lyne Sauvageau. The IRSST&amp;rsquo;s chief scientific officer, Alain Marchand, attended the 6th Research Conference held by PEROSH (Partnership for European Research in Occupational Safety and Health) following the Sheffield Group meeting.

Emerging issues and challenges on the Sheffield Group agenda

Lyne Sauvageau provided an overview of the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s main achievements in her presentation to members of the Sheffield Group. The strategic and scientific discussions held by Group members focused on several emerging OHS issues, including the integration of artificial intelligence, occupational psychological health and the loss of confidence in science in certain geopolitical contexts.

The president-CEO also highlighted the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s solid position on the international stage:

&amp;ldquo;I returned with the firm conviction that we are working on the right issues at the right time. We are well-positioned, our impact is tangible and we have a role to play beyond our borders.&amp;rdquo;

The discussions also shed light on several challenges faced by the member institutes and research centres, particularly those related to governance, funding and the integration of societal concerns into scientific priorities.

Despite very different national contexts, a shared determination to strengthen international collaborations emerged, as well as a growing recognition of the role that research institutes must play to facilitate the application of research results in workplaces.

Lyne Sauvageau, keynote speaker at the PEROSH conference

IRSST president-CEO Lyne Sauvageau was invited to give a keynote address at the PEROSH 6th Research Conference. She expressed her concerns about the erosion of scientific literacy and its potential repercussions on applied OHS research, particularly in the North American context. More specifically, she analyzed the occupational health and safety issues generated by the pressure placed on NIOSH, an organization that has published approximately a third of all peer-reviewed scientific articles on OHS in the last ten years.

&amp;ldquo;Today, we are facing a two-pronged situation: on the one hand, financial constraints and economic priorities require us to demonstrate that our organizations are optimizing the use of public funds at our disposal. On the other hand, we must reinforce public and stakeholder confidence in science and research. We may excel at what we do, and be efficient and politically relevant, but without the support of the public or of a broader public, our message may not be heard. Given this state of affairs, we must step up our international collaborations. In fact, while we are each addressing our national realities, we are all facing very similar challenges.&amp;rdquo;

Half a century serving OHS

This meeting marked the 50th anniversary of the Sheffield Group and was held in Manchester, not far from Sheffield (the city where the group was founded), from September 6 to 9, 2025. To underscore the historic importance of this anniversary, the United Kingdom&amp;rsquo;s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which hosted the event, organized a series of visits and activities highlighting the changes in working conditions, primarily through an immersion in British industrial history and early child labour legislation.

The IRSST within the Sheffield Group

In 1988, the IRSST joined an international association of OHS research facilities named the &amp;ldquo;Sheffield Group.&amp;rdquo; This group promotes the exchange of scientific information and the formation of research partnerships. The IRSST hosted the Group in 1993, 2012 and 2019.

    <title>New policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI or GenAI) in the IRSST’s scientific activities </title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3362/new-policy-on-the-use-of-generative-artificial-intelligence-generative-ai-or-genai-in-the-irssts-scientific-activities</link>
    <description>The IRSST wishes to announce the official publication of its Politique sur l&amp;rsquo;utilisation de l&amp;rsquo;intelligence artificielle g&#233;n&#233;rative (IAG) dans les activit&#233;s scientifiques (in French only). This new policy is designed to provide a framework for the transparent and responsible use of generative AI tools in the context of scientific work conducted or funded by the Institute.

Generative AI is playing an increasingly important role in research, particularly for writing, data analysis and the production of scientific content. Aware of the advantages but also the risks associated with GenAI tools, the IRSST deemed it essential to adopt a policy that would provide a framework for the use of these tools in order to guarantee scientific integrity, protect confidentiality and sensitive data, safeguard intellectual property, ensure ethical and regulatory compliance, and promote the strategic, equitable and transparent use of generative AI.

A framework for responsible use

The policy applies to everyone involved in the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s scientific activities or benefitting from Institute funding, including researchers, staff members, students and research partners.

&amp;ldquo;Recognizing the fast pace of developments in artificial intelligence, this policy will be revised periodically to ensure that it remains pertinent, efficient and aligned with best practices.&amp;rdquo; Sophie De Serres, Assistant to the Chief Scientific Officer &amp;ndash; Research Division.

Rigorous and ethical research

By publishing this policy, the IRSST confirms its commitment to innovative, rigorous research that is compliant with the highest standards of integrity. The framework for the use of generative AI is intended to support the scientific community in adopting responsible practices, thus guaranteeing both the quality of the knowledge produced and public confidence.

    <title>Multilevel Prevention to Prevent Suicide among Police Officers</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3223/multilevel-prevention-to-prevent-suicide-among-police-officers</link>
    <description>Police officers regularly face multiple forms of violence and aggression, distress, and even death; consequently, their profession can have substantial impacts on their mental health. This work environment can pave the way for mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression, which are associated with suicidal behaviours.

A document produced at the request of the Association paritaire pour la sant&#233; et la s&#233;curit&#233; du travail &amp;ndash; Affaires municipales (Joint Association for health and safety in the workplace, Municipal Affairs&amp;rsquo; sector; APSAM) is intended for police organizations and anyone who is interested in preventing suicide among police personnel. This handbook is of interest for managers and representatives of police force employees and for members of workplace health and safety committees that would like to set up a suicide prevention program or interventions. Likewise, police officers, trainers, mental health professionals, workplace health and safety and human resources personnel, police force partners, and the various groups representing police officers can find valuable information therein.

    <title>Update of Fact Sheet Hand-Held Pneumatic Tools – Protect Your Ears and Your Hands </title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3205/update-of-fact-sheet-hand-held-pneumatic-tools-protect-your-ears-and-your-hands</link>
    <description>Hand-held pneumatic tools generate noise and vibration that, over the years, can cause harmful effects on health. The duration and intensity of exposure to noise can cause deafness, while the duration and intensity of exposure to vibration can result in Raynaud&amp;rsquo;s syndrome (fingers that turn white) and musculoskeletal disorders.

In Quebec, since June 16, 2023, Order in Council 781-2021 has amended the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety (ROHS) such that workers may no longer be exposed to more than 85 dBA for eight hours, more than 88 dBA for four hours or more than 91 dBA for two hours.

Updated fact sheet Hand-Held Pneumatic Tools &amp;ndash; Protect Your Ears and Your Hands, 2nd Edition takes this new regulation into account.

International Women&amp;#39;s Day first took place on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. That day, over a million women and men attended public events to show their support. In the years that followed, other countries began to observe and celebrate this day. The United Nations recognized 1975 as International Women&amp;#39;s Year and began celebrating March 8 as International Women&amp;#39;s Day.

    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3149/sias-2024--the-11supthsup-international-conference-on-safety-of-industrial-automated-systems</link>
    <description>The next edition of SIAS will take place in Tampere, Finland, on June 12 and 13, 2024.

In 2024, this conference will be organized by the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT Technical Research Center of Finland), Tampere University, and Finnish Society of Automation.

Take stock of the advancement of knowledge in the safety of industrial machines

Automation has reduced the frequency of physical person-machine interactions; however, it has increased the complexity of human interventions. For example, accidents still occur during maintenance or diagnostic phases, usually because the machine starts unexpectedly. A better understanding of human-machine interface conditions as well as the development of methods, means and tools to control risks must be considered. This conference takes a close look at industrial research and development from an occupational health and safety perspective. The themes covered include the assessment of &amp;ldquo;machine&amp;rdquo;. risks, safety and protection devices, the design of control systems, as well as human and organizational factors.

SIAS is a prestigious event first organized in 1999 by internationally renowned experts from institutions such as IRSST (Canada), INRS (France), JNIOSH (Japan) and IFA (Germany).

    <title>ICOH 2024</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3147/icoh-2024</link>
    <description>The 34th International Congress on Occupational Health (ICOH 2024) will be held in Marrakech (Morocco), from April 28 to May 3, 2024.

Considered the largest international event devoted to research in occupational health and safety (OSH), the Congress of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) is a venue for the dissemination and exchange of new knowledge and scientific approaches as well as solutions aimed at improving OHS and the well-being of workers.

Under the motto Enhancing Occupational Research and Practices: Closing the Gaps! the 6-day congress will focus on strategies to improve OSH policies and implementation in low- and middle-income countries.

About ICOH

Founded in 1906, ICOH is the oldest scientific association in the field of OSH and is an NGO recognized by the United Nations and has a close working relationship with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It was founded in 1906 in Milan as the Permanent Commission on Occupational Health. Today, ICOH is the world&amp;#39;s leading international scientific society in the field of occupational health with a membership of more than 2,000 professionals from over 110 countries. Its official languages are English and French. The most visible activity of ICOH is the triennial International Congress on Occupational Health.

The IRSST&amp;rsquo;s involvement over time

The IRSST has already organized the 23rd edition of this event, in 1990, at the Palais des congr&#232;s de Montr&#233;al. Under the theme Let&amp;rsquo;s Talk Solutions, the event then titled &amp;ldquo;International Congress of Occupational Medicine&amp;rdquo; offered 600 conferences and presentations to 2,300 participants from 75 countries. At the time, the event was co-chaired by the IRSST and the International Labor Organization.

Furthermore, for several years the IRSST has been a member of the ICOH, and members of its staff participate in activities within scientific committees.

    <title>An Innovative Method Developed by S&#233;bastien Gagn&#233; and &#201;ric Langlois</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3136/an-innovative-method-developed-by-sebastien-gagne-and-eric-langlois</link>
    <description>S&#233;bastien Gagn&#233; and &#201;ric Langlois have made a breakthrough in toxicology: an innovative and very efficient method for urinary ortho-cresol analysis, a plus for the clientele of the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s laboratories.

Their article on the subject, Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography&amp;ndash;tandem mass spectrometry quantitation of o-cresol in hydrolyzed human urine to assess toluene exposure, has been published in the scientific journal Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.

The Genesis of a Solution

&amp;ldquo;We went off the beaten track to develop this method,&amp;rdquo; remarks Gagn&#233;. &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rsquo;ve been working at the IRSST for 13 years, and this is the most impressive work I&amp;rsquo;ve ever done.&amp;rdquo;

End-of-shift (and end-of-week) urinary o-cresol levels reflect same-day esposure and correlate with toluene exposure intensity.

&amp;ldquo;o-Cresol is a molecule we routinely measure as a marker of toluene exposure in workers. However, the sensitivity of this parameter is so-so, and only made it possible to assess exposure where the TWAEV was 50 ppm. The method was also often inconclusive due to interference. In addition, detection limits were not low enough. The lowering of exposure values in the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety (ROHS) led to a review of the biological reference value, called the biological exposure index (BEI), which obliged us to revise the method. We took this opportunity to take a close look at all the problems inherent in this method

We thus took a molecule that was incompatible with the type of instrument we were using and converted it to make it compatible. We derivatize it with dansyl chloride, which makes it compatible with a liquid chromatography-mass spectrography system.&amp;rdquo;

o-Cresol is a volatile molecule that cannot be analyzed by liquid chromatography. The scientists at the IRSST converted it in the urine sample preparation process to make it non-volatile and easily ionizable in the instrument.

&amp;ldquo;This transformation enabled us to look for very low detection limits and eliminate the interferences that we previously had. The older method had several peaks and it was very difficult to find o-cresol in the &amp;lsquo;forest of peaks.&amp;rsquo; With the new method, we have two easily identifiable peaks and can selectively search for o-cresol.&amp;rdquo;

&amp;ldquo;We are the first in the world to have done this!&amp;rdquo; exclaims Gagn&#233;.

Usefulness

&amp;ldquo;In practical terms, this discovery enables us to measure the intensity of exposure levels in workers. Biological monitoring measures the total body burden of a substance in all possible absorption routes: dermal, respiratory and digestive. The level of o-cresol gives the individual&amp;rsquo;s level of exposure to toluene. The more toluene a worker is exposed to, or has absorbed, the higher the level of o-cresol in the urine. This level will never be zero,&amp;rdquo; cautions Gagn&#233;, &amp;ldquo;because there is always a proportion that comes from atmospheric pollution, cigarette smoke and diet, but at least it will be below the reference value.&amp;rdquo;

&amp;ldquo;Usually, volatile molecules are analyzed with an instrument using gas chromotography. Non-volatile or semi-volatile molecules are analyzed with liquid chromatography. We&amp;rsquo;ve gone off the beaten track by taking a volatile molecule and making it non-volatile, in order to analyze it with another technique.&amp;rdquo;

Future Avenues of Research

&amp;ldquo;We are continuing our explorations and working on using this method for other molecules, such as hydroxypyrene, the biomarker for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This is another volatile molecule that we want to convert into a non-volatile one for analysis by liquid chromatography. We&amp;rsquo;ve opened up a new avenue for the analysis of volatile compounds,&amp;rdquo; explains Gagn&#233;.

Collaboration and Co-construction

The scientific literature mentions that research groups derivatize their molecules using agents such as dansyl chloride, which appeared to IRSST scientists to be the most suitable for o-cresol.

&amp;ldquo;We tried it out, and the result met our expectations. For a chemist, this discovery is an incredible source of pride! I didn&amp;rsquo;t work alone, but in close collaboration with my colleague, Eric Langlois.&amp;rdquo;

S&#233;bastien Gagn&#233; is the author and co-author of some forty articles.

What Is Toluene?

Toluene is a volatile organic compound used in domestic and industrial applications. The main routes of exposure to toluene in the workplace are inhalation and dermal contact. Exposure to theis substance can cause severe damage to the nervous system. Measuring exposure to toluene is therefore crucial to preventing occupational diseases.

Toluene is metabolized mainly as hippuric acid, S-benzylmercapturic acid and epoxides. These are rapidly converted to o-/p-cresol, which is then excreted in the urine as glucoronides and conjugated sulphates. o-Cresol and its conjugates can be chemically hydrolized to form free o-cresol, which can then be used as a urinary biomarker of toluene exposure. As the IRSST chemist explained, however, current analytical methods for quantifying o-cresol in hydrolyzed urine are weakened by interferences and are not suffiently sensitive. It was therefore necessary to develop a liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method for assessing toluene exposure. This was achieved at the IRSST!

    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3113/launch-of-the-20232024-competition-for-the-research-project-grant-program</link>
    <description>The IRSST&amp;rsquo;s Research Fund and Partnerships Division is pleased to announce the launch of the 2023&amp;ndash;2024 competition for the Research Project Grant Program.

The IRSST has announced three research priorities for this year&amp;rsquo;s competition:

1. Battery EVs and hybrid EVs: handling batteries and OHS risks:

Identification and estimation of the risks associated with handling batteries of electric/hybrid vehicles in garages and car dealerships, as well as ways of controlling and reducing these risks in workplaces (e.g., training, tools and equipment, personal and collective protective equipment, work space).

2. Controlling violence in the workplace:

 The level of development, implementation and effectiveness of measures and practices used by organizations to control workplace violence in the most heavily affected sectors.
 Effective organizational practices and interventions for preventing conjugal violence in the workplace, by enterprise size.

At least one project for each of the three priorities will be funded. Notwithstanding the priorities identified, the competition is open to all research initiatives aligning with one of the themes in the Institute&amp;rsquo;s reference framework for OHS research.

The total funding envelope is $3,000,000 and the maximum amount per project is $360,000, including indirect expenses.

Deadline for submitting a letter of intent: September 18, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

    <title>A Change in our Brand Image</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/headlines/id/3097/a-change-in-our-brand-image</link>
    <description>We are proud to announce the launch of a new visual identity for the organization as part of the continuing evolution of the IRSST brand.&amp;nbsp;

The IRSST has grown and evolved over the past 42 years, and we deemed it time to update our visual identity. The Institute&amp;rsquo;s new visual identity presents a modern image consistent with the values and orientations set forth in the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s strategic plan.

The main component of this updated visual identity is a new logo in the form of a powerful and highly meaningful symbol. The new logo is designed to reflect who we are today and to symbolize our future. With passing time, the Institute&amp;rsquo;s visual identity will therefore come to be associated with a composite symbol. The following illustration will help you decode its meaning.

The IRSST&amp;rsquo;s emblematic colour is therefore orange, chosen for its association with prevention and safety.
