Montr&#233;al, June 14th, 2024 - the Indigenous Centre for Occupational Health &amp;amp; Public Safety (ICOHPS) and the IRSST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). It is designed to promote cooperation and joint research initiatives in order to identify, respond to and mitigate the specific health and safety issues concerning First Nations workers.

This MOU between the IRSST and the ICOHPS is a first in the history of the IRSST. It opens up big opportunities and creates a forum for mutual exchange and commitment aimed at improving health and safety conditions in Indigenous communities, and in particular, for the members of the roughly 40 communities in Quebec.

&amp;nbsp;

The agreement is the result of meetings and exchanges between the instigators of this initiative, namely, Toby Desnomie, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the ICOHPS, and Daniel C&#244;t&#233;, researcher at the IRSST. For over a year now, they have been mobilizing their respective constituents and partners, raising their awareness and convincing them of the importance of initiating this partnership, all in a spirit of respect, listening and openness, three essential values in the search for solutions and strategies aimed at preventing industrial accidents and occupational diseases among workers in the various First Nations communities.

    <title>Change in the IRSST’s Brand Image</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/3098/change-in-the-irssts-brand-image</link>
    <description>Montr&#233;al, May&amp;nbsp;2, 2023 &amp;ndash; The members of the staff of the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauv&#233; en sant&#233; et en s&#233;curit&#233; du travail (IRSST) are proud to announce the launch of the Institute&amp;rsquo;s new visual identity as part of the ongoing evolution of its brand.

&amp;ldquo;The IRSST has grown and evolved over the past 42 years, and we deemed it time to update our visual identity. The new logo was therefore designed to reflect who we are today and to symbolize our future,&amp;rdquo; explained Lyne Sauvageau, president and CEO of the IRSST. The Institute&amp;rsquo;s new visual identity presents a modern image consistent with the values and orientations set forth in the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s strategic plan.

This revamping of our brand image will enable the IRSST to better position itself with its various stakeholders and to help achieve the desired outreach and impact. The updated image consists of a powerful and highly meaningful symbol. &amp;ldquo;The colour orange was chosen deliberately: it is the colour of prevention. As was the graphic art, which highlights the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s forward-looking view of occupational health and safety (OHS) issues, while at the same time underscoring how it brings knowledge, as well as OHS stakeholders and professionals, together in a collaborative effort to inform OHS action,&amp;rdquo; concluded Ms. Sauvageau.

The Work Involved

Over the past few weeks, the IRSST&amp;rsquo;s various Web sites, publications, documents and tools have been reviewed and updated to reflect its new brand image.

However, changing an institutional image is a process that involves many steps and can take time. Some changes may therefore be introduced gradually over the coming months.

From now on, in compliance with the new visual identity, the new IRSST logo will have to be used in all your communication materials. To obtain the new logo or answers to any questions you may have about the application of the new brand image, please contact the Communications Department at communications@irsst.qc.ca.

    <title>$150,000 to Develop a Method for Evaluating an Air Contaminant</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/3044/150000-to-develop-a-method-for-evaluating-an-air-contaminant</link>
    <description>Montreal, February 7, 2023 &amp;ndash; WorkSafeBC has granted $150,000 in funding to an IRSST team headed up by Simon Aubin, chemist, hygienist and Assistant to the director &amp;ndash; research, Laboratory Division; the team members are Pierre-Luc Cloutier and S&#233;bastien Gagn&#233;, joined by Lo&#239;c Wingert, an expert in aerosol metrology.

This financing will support the Method development and validation for the evaluation of airborne TDI according to IFV notation project, which has the aim of developing and validating a method to evaluate toluene diisocyanate (TDI) according to IFV (inhalable fraction and vapour) notation, as defined by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH&amp;reg;); the notation has been incorporated in the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety since 2020.

Simon Aubin points out &amp;ldquo;isocyanate exposure has long been linked to the development of occupational asthma. In 2016, the ACGIH&amp;reg; lowered its recommended TDI exposure value from 5 ppb to 1 ppb and assigned IFV notation to it. IFV notation capitalizes on the fact that TDI is present in air in both vapour and particulate form. Thus, it&amp;rsquo;s very important for workplaces to have access to such a method. WorksafeBC is of the same opinion, and since the IRSST is a global leader in isocyanate evaluation, this kind of collaborative project makes perfect sense.&amp;rdquo;

&amp;ldquo;This success story provides yet more evidence of the excellence of the research done at the IRSST and in our labs,&amp;rdquo; affirmed Lyne Sauvageau, President and CEO of the IRSST. &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rsquo;d like to congratulate our scientists for obtaining this funding. Their efforts fit into an institutional initiative to develop co-financing collaborations for OSH research projects.&amp;rdquo;

WorkSafeBC

Since 1917, WorkSafeBC has helped to improve the health and safety of British Columbians in the workplace by building a sustainable no-fault insurance system that supports both workers and employers. WorkSafeBC&amp;rsquo;s Research Grants Program supports research related to occupational health and safety and work disability to provide insight and solutions for issues faced by workers, employers, and WorkSafeBC.

    <title>WebExpo: Simplifying the Interpretation of Occupational Exposure Measurements</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/879/webexpo-simplifying-the-interpretation-of-occupational-exposure-measurements</link>
    <description>A large part of industrial hygienists&amp;rsquo; work consists of measuring workers&amp;rsquo; occupational exposure levels. The high variability in measured levels poses a considerable challenge when it comes to interpreting them relative to occupational exposure limits (OELs). Despite the existence of a consensus-based framework for this purpose, the associated approaches have not been widely adopted by industrial hygiene practitioners. They require calculations that are not feasible with current tools, and the statistical results obtained can be difficult to communicate to workers and managers.

    <title>Apple Growers’ Skin Exposure to Pesticides</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/869/apple-growers-skin-exposure-to-pesticides</link>
    <description>The Institut de recherche Robert-Sauv&#233; en sant&#233; et en s&#233;curit&#233; du travail (IRSST) has just published a study describing apple growers&amp;rsquo; skin exposure while performing their main tasks related to mixing and spraying pesticides and their use of protective clothing. Based on a review of the literature, extensive field observations and repeated interviews with five growers, the researchers conducted a detailed analysis of exposure situations and factors that facilitate or interfere with the wearing of protective clothing.

    <title>Occupational Exposure to Bioaerosols When Using Biological Degreasing Stations</title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/862/occupational-exposure-to-bioaerosols-when-using-biological-degreasing-stations</link>
    <description>To clean oily or greasy parts in mechanical maintenance shops, workers use biowashers or biological degreasing stations. The degreasing agents in these washing stations contain bacteria for which no metrological data were available for assessing the occupational risk of exposure through inhalation. To address this lack of data, the researchers monitored five biological degreasing stations for a year, taking 50&amp;nbsp;mL samples of degreasing fluid every two months and, for comparison purposes, an initial sample of unused degreaser from each station. Using a variety of methods, the researchers counted and identified the bacteria that colonized the degreasers. They detected 60&amp;nbsp;species of bacteria at concentrations ranging from 3.6 x&amp;nbsp;104 to 2.6&amp;nbsp;x&amp;nbsp;107&amp;nbsp;CFU/mL in the used fluids, whereas only one species, Bacillus subtilis, was found in the unused fluids.

    <title>A Program To Improve the Return to Work of Injured and Depressed Workers </title>
    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/856/a-program-to-improve-the-return-to-work-of-injured-and-depressed-workers</link>
    <description>Many workers who have been injured on the job present symptoms of pain and depression, which can have negative effects on their recovery. Symptoms of depression can hinder a person&amp;rsquo;s ability to perform many important activities of daily living, including occupational activities. Studies have shown that injured workers with symptoms of depression remain off work twice as long as those who are not depressed. Interventions used to treat pain in injured workers are clearly less effective when they also present symptoms of depression.

Montreal, April 17, 2019 &amp;ndash; At the Gala Excellence &#201;TS of the &#201;cole de technologie sup&#233;rieure, held on April 8, the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauv&#233; en sant&#233; et s&#233;curit&#233; du travail (IRSST) was named Partenaire d&amp;rsquo;excellence en recherche-innovation [outstanding innovation-research partner].

This honour underscores the exceptional collaboration between the IRSST and the &#201;TS in joint research projects. For a number of years now, the two institutions have frequently collaborated on a variety of major projects, such as the Development of a range of comfort indices for earplugs to improve hearing protection for workers project, whose importance was underscored at the gala. A total of 11 joint research projects are currently being carried out by the &#201;TS and the IRSST.

&amp;ldquo;The IRSST is proud to be among the &#201;TS&amp;rsquo; recurring partners. There is no question but that the collaboration between the two organizations&amp;rsquo; researchers moves occupational health and safety research forward, while also expanding the Institute&amp;rsquo;s reach,&amp;rdquo; affirmed Marie Larue, president and CEO of the IRSST. In addition to the &#201;TS, the IRSST collaborates with numerous universities and research centres in Qu&#233;bec, elsewhere in Canada and around the world.

The Institute&amp;rsquo;s researchers and those it funds conduct studies and help advance knowledge in matters related to the prevention of industrial accidents and occupational diseases and the rehabilitation of the affected workers.

    <link>https://www.irsst.qc.ca/institute/medias/news-releases/id/711/occupational-hearing-loss-and-presbycusis</link>
    <description>The Institut de recherche Robert-Sauv&#233; en sant&#233; et en s&#233;curit&#233; du travail (IRSST) recently published a review of the literature on the links between occupational hearing loss and presbycusis (hearing loss due to aging). The objective of this study was to (1) determine whether exposure to noise can accelerate the process of presbycusis; (2) establish whether the use of correction factors can enable occupational hearing loss and presbycusis to be differentiated; (3) assess the progression of hearing loss after the worker is no longer exposed to workplace noise. To that end, the researchers analysed the content of some 30 scientific studies published since 2000.
