Types of grants
Every year, the IRSST provides funding of $3.4 million for research projects and activities by external researchers. Funding is by project or activity, with follow-up mechanisms that promote interaction with the IRSST.
The IRSST offers three grant programs:

The Competitive research grant program (formerly "Funded Research") is intended for researchers who wish to conduct an occupational health and safety research project. The work may include studies, analyses, conception or development carried out according to a scientific process and likely to contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

The Collaborative research grant program covers the same type of work as the Competitive research grant program but differs in one aspect: the research objectives are defined in collaboration with the IRSST and fall within the priority themes.

The Collaborative activity grant program is generally work defined in collaboration with the IRSST, and whose cost and duration are more limited than for a research project. For the most part, it is work that falls within the IRSST’s priority themes and that is preliminary to or follows a research project. This work mainly takes the form of literature reviews; preliminary, exploratory or feasibility studies; statistical analyses; or expertise activities applying a proven methodology or to promote a technique, approach or product resulting from an IRSST-funded project.
Special programs may be announced during the year. They result from specific agreements by which the IRSST and other scientific organizations (funding agencies, research institutes, structured research networks, etc.) work together and jointly commit to offering research grant programs to develop specific areas of occupational health and safety research.

Priority themes
Grant applications must preferably correspond to one of the Institute’s seven fields of research. Certain themes within each field have been suggested, particularly regarding collaborative research grants. Researchers may contact the leader of the research field in question for more information.
Eligibility
Any researcher who can make a scientific contribution to the health and safety of Québec workers can submit a funding application. The IRSST particularly wants to receive proposals from scientists possessing a doctorate or the equivalent. The person signing the application as project leader must reside in Québec or be connected to a Québec institution.
Students registered in a university study program are not eligible.
Funding Procedures
The amount of funding is based on the rules generally applied by funding agencies.
Funding procedures apply to research projects and activities. The term “project” is used solely to make reading easier.

Eligible expenses. Indirect costs for research are not accepted. Salaries of research assistants, stipends for students, the cost of some types of equipment, and some travel expenses are covered. However, researchers already receiving remuneration from another institution may not apply for remuneration in the framework of the project. The IRSST reserves the right to base funding on certain conditions relating either to the ownership of funded equipment, or of data, results, processes and inventions. If need be, these conditions are the subject of specific agreements. Installments. Depending on the project's duration and the budget, the grant may be disbursed in installments. The first instalment is usually paid at the start of the project, with others following the approval of progress reports, if applicable. The final instalment is paid on approval of the final report by the IRSST, following a peer review.

Deadline for use of funds. The use of the research funds for activities such as the correction of the final report, the presentation of the results at conferences or colloquia, and meetings with the intermediaries and partners in the study, is permitted up to six (6) months after the date of submission of the final report. This rule in no way obliges the IRSST to make the last payment planned on acceptance of the report.

Unspent balance. At the end of the study, any unspent balance must be returned to the IRSST within three months following the fund utilization deadline.
Research requirements
All funded research must be the subject of a final report, and depending on the duration of the work, of progress reports. The IRSST publishes and distributes the research reports to its clients, in accordance with its Policy on Politique d'édition des rapports. (PDF - In French)
Intellectual Property
In the absence of specific agreements, researchers maintain their intellectual property rights, as well as publication rights, for IRSST-funded work. However, mention of the source of funding is required. For more information, consult the Politique sur la propriété intellectuelle (PDF - In French).
