Pre-design phase of a long-bore, portable, hydraulic drill Abstract Portable drills used in mines have several weaknesses: they generate noise and vibration levels exceeding acceptable standards, and are heavy. The purpose of this project was first to analyze their operational characteristics during field observations, and then to determine the appropriate components of the future drill. A modular, portable mini-drill was produced and its specifications established. The mini-drill will be quieter and easily disassembled, and will not expose operators to vibration. Sigma Mines and the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec have taken the initial steps to produce and sell this safer and higher-performance mini-drill.
