Impact of sampling techniques and methodology on sampling results

Abstract

The IRSST’s basic knowledge on flow measurement and the use of pumps is summarized in this document, which constitutes a reference tool for industrial hygiene professionals who want to know more about the origin of the mathematical formulas and recommendations in the Sampling Guide for Air Contaminants in the Workplace published by the IRSST.

This document deals mainly with the effects of ambient conditions on measurement and sampling techniques, and describes and quantifies them. It explains the operation of the pumps and flowmeters, so that they can be used effectively. This information can therefore be used, if necessary, to make volume corrections taking into account the effects of the ambient conditions present during industrial hygiene interventions. The document also provides some brief information and bibliographical sources on pressure variation equations based on altitude, depth and temperature that are used in industrial hygiene.
