Safe handling procedures for magnesium shavings and molten magnesium

Abstract

The opening of a magnesium electrolysis plant, and the possibility of similar plant openings, has created a strong interest among companies in Québec's secondary processing sector in the use of magnesium as a raw material. Magnesium handling is associated with specific hazards, and there were no training tools describing these hazards and related preventive measures. This project was undertaken to prepare various training and information tools using data on accident hazards and safe work practices. This information is now transmitted through various materials, including a video (in French and English) with support documentation and an evaluation questionnaire.
