Health and safety considerations related to the design of grinding operations in the heavy machinery sector. Phase 1: Analysis of risk factors and process-related needs analysis Abstract The use of portable grinders exposes workers to a variety of hazards, including noise, vibration, dust, and postural and tool-related ergonomic strain. This attempt to improve the safety of grinding adopted a global approach derived from simultaneous engineering. In collaboration with a technical team of operators, maintenance workers and engineers, an interdisciplinary research team evaluated various grinders and identified user needs, process limitations, and potentially hazardous work situations. Selection criteria for grinders were established and recommendations concerning the safe use of portable grinders formulated.
