Development of an instrument for measuring the stopping time of metal presses Abstract One of the most common ways of improving the safety of metal presses is location of bimanual controls at a distance from the press slide. The calculation of the minimum control-slide distance, the key to this measure's effectiveness, requires the evaluation of stopping and closing times, which varies from press to press. This guide describes a portable chronometer that uses a system of sensors to detect press activation and braking, measure slide displacement and calculate stopping and closing times. Installation of the chronometer does not require modification of the presses. The principal characteristics of the chronometer and integrated data-recording, processing, and analysis software are reviewed. By helping chronometer users better understand the device, this guide contributes to its effective and safe use.
