Protective clothing for firefighters Abstract A survey conducted by the joint sectoral association of the municipal affairs sector revealed two problems associated with the protective clothing worn by firefighters: in the summer, two-piece suits are a cause of heat stress, and in the winter, frozen gloves reduce dexterity. The Centre des technologies textiles (textile technology centre) was contracted to conduct a literature review and undertake laboratory tests to identify substitute textiles or new combinations of existing textiles that offer better comfort and dexterity under all climatic conditions, without sacrificing cost, protection, or fire resistance. The results will prove useful to clothing manufacturers as well as to municipalities that buy clothing for firefighters.
