                  The Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST) and the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC) of Newfoundland and Labrador have signed a specific agreement with the aim of the realization of a review of the scientific literature on the risks of professional cancer for the shipyard workers.

Through this agreement, the parties will jointly finance the

                  Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Université de Montréal, Joseph Zayed has just been named research leader in the chemical substances and biological agents field at the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST). With a doctorate in public health, specializing in environmental toxicology, and author of numerous scientific publications, Mr. Zayed was also the director of the Centre interuniversitaire de toxicologie from 2001 to 2004 and chair of the expert advisory committee of the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centres in 2003- 2004.

                  At the 
International Economic Forum of the Americas held in Montréal in June, the IRSST 
organized and conducted a workshop whose theme was sustainable development and 
psychological health in the workplace. Four speakers shared their concerns about 
psychological damage, and presented the challenges for research and prevention. 
These speakers were Dr. John Howard, senior consultant at the National Institute 
for Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control in the 
United States, Ms. Karen Russ, director of the Human Factors Group and Technical 
Programmes of the Health and Safety Laboratory in the United Kingdom, Ms. Marie 
Larue, president-CEO of the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en 
sécurité du travail (IRSST), and Ms. Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community 
and Social Services of Ontario.
