The mining industry has undergone a significant reduction in the number of compensated injuries in recent years. However, the frequency of accidents and their severity make it a sector that is still at high risk. Since the IRSST’s 2009-2011 three-year plan targets the issues related to occupational health and safety in the mining industry, the institute’s Statistical Knowledge and Surveillance Group chose this sector to test the method that will be retained for estimating the direct and indirect costs of occupational injuries.
