Prevention of cumulative trauma disorders in a garment factory

Abstract

The CSST (Québec Occupational Health and Safety Commission) has committed itself to conduct pilot projects designed to improve hazardous workstations in companies with particularly high rates of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs), and promote CTD prevention by the companies themselves. In this project, the IRSST will help establish a participatory ergonomics programme in a factory producing men's garments in the Montréal area. The research contract agreed upon by the CSST, the union, and the company calls for the formation of a joint participatory committee. Following training and supervision by professional ergonomists, the committee will identify the most problematic work situations, analyse problems and attempt to find solutions, and implement and follow-up those solutions.
