Performance trials of protective boots for forestry workers Abstract An IRSST research team had developed a method to evaluate the performance of protective equipment, such as chaps and boots, used by forestry workers. It was however difficult to measure the energy required to cut through the protective equipment with a gas-powered chain saw, the basis for this method. The IRSST research team therefore developed a new test method by replacing the chain saw with a flywheel. Because flywheels store energy at a constant level, measurement problems are eliminated, measurements are more reproducible, and results are more reliable. Following minor modifications, the method can subsequently be applied to other types of equipment, such as chaps and gloves.
