Occupational accidents in the forestry sector. Phase 3: Analysis of information collected through accident-description questionnaires for events occuring between June 1997 and May 1998

Abstract

IRSST analysis of accident scenarios from over one thousand requests for compensation filed with the CSST confirmed the need to collect information that better describes risk factors and the circumstances surrounding accidents, if preventive activities are to be effective.

The joint prevention committee of the forestry sector accordingly asked the IRSST to collect and analyse information concerning accidents occurring between June 1997 and May 1998; this should substantially enrich the data on occupational injuries in this sector. Data will be collected through two telephone questionnaires, the first a self-administered questionnaire on the circumstances surrounding accidents, to be completed by workers having suffered accidents, the second, to be completed employers, on the organisation of prevention activities. Analysis of this data will allow the development of descriptive profiles and accident scenarios for the felling and sylviculture subsectors, with particular attention to the association between accidents and organisational variables such as the production mode and safety organisation.
