Evaluation of formaldehyde exposure in hospital settings

Abstract

Formaldehyde is used in hospitals as a disinfectant and as a fixative and preservative of anatomical specimens. Its toxicity is well-documented, and the current Québec exposure limit is a ceiling value of 2 ppm. It is estimated that approximately 225 pathologists and hundreds of technicians are potentially exposed to formaldehyde in Québec. In order to better identify the sources of exposure, and to formulate preventive measures, short-term (20 to 40 minute) sampling was performed in the vicinity of all suspected occupational exposure sources.

The results indicate that formaldehyde levels in pathology laboratories sometimes exceed the exposure limit, that the exposure in autopsy rooms is negligible, and that the fumigation of mattresses results in significant exposure of personnel. A prevention guide was developed and distributed, through the Association pour la santé et la sécurité du travail du secteur des affaires sociales (Occupational Health and Safety Association, Social Affairs Sector), to potentially-exposed workers. Recommendations contained in this guide concern ventilation, sealing of containers, personal protective equipment, and substitution of other substances for formaldehyde where appropriate.
