Development of an intervention strategy to reduce musculoskeletal disorders related to repetitive work

Abstract

This project was undertaken to validate a participatory ergonomics strategy developed in a previous project to reduce musculoskeletal injuries caused by repetitive work. The strategy revolves around the creation of bipartite groups which set priorities, analyse workstations, and propose and implement solutions.

Bipartite groups in two companies in the Electrical Products Fabrication sector analysed seven workstations, developed 80 potential solutions, and implemented 50 corrective measures. Risk factors were found to have decreased in 78% of cases.

The groups acquired great independence in workstation analysis, although they experienced the greatest difficulty in learning to take the various types of variation in work activities into account. Users viewed the participatory ergonomics strategy positively and were confident of its benefits and its eventual support by management and other workers.

The principal conditions underlying the success of this type of strategy were also identified.
