Falls from heights are one of the main causes of industrial accidents, particularly in the construction industry. They produce serious and sometimes even fatal injuries. The regulations stipulate, however, that workers exposed to such a risk must be protected. For work on a floor, guardrails are the most appropriate means of collective protection. However, it is difficult to verify their level of safety since they are manufactured and installed on construction sites. To evaluate their strength, effectiveness and reliability, the researchers performed laboratory testing on wooden guardrails, and on guardrails with metal stays as support, with metal frames connected to the stays, depending on the conditions observed in the field. This allowed them to validate a practical and reproducible method for verifying the safety of these types of guardrails manufactured and installed on construction sites and their compliance with standards and regulations.
