The mining sector has often been considered as a sector with hazardous jobs. Despite improvements, this sector figures among the most affected by occupational injuries and diseases. Also, the questions of manpower recruitment and integration are central to the concerns of mining companies. By anticipating the retirement of many experienced workers, these companies are recruiting from among a diversified pool: young workers, Aboriginal workers, immigrants, or from other sectors in economic difficulty. In this context, it seems essential that preventive knowledge be transmitted to the new employees to increase their know-how and to enrich their competencies in order to prevent occupational injuries.
The aim of this project is to document the conditions facilitating the safe and competent integration of new workers of varied ages and career paths. Collected from five mining companies, the data should lead to the identification of avenues for improvement of competencies and the preparation of manpower to meet the specific needs of the mining sector.
