Analysis of the effect of workstation rotation in an automobile manufacturing plant

Abstract

Job rotation in companies is promoting interest in occupational health and safety because it is a means frequently proposed for reducing musculoskeletal risk factors. A study to document the advantages and disadvantages of this practice was carried out in a large company in the automobile industry, where the labor force is aging. It presented a picture of the company and described the situation of employee versatility and models of job rotation practices. The results improve scientific knowledge about versatility and provide a better understanding of the conditions that promote or hinder rotation as well as the employees’ viewpoint on this subject. The report does not provide a final answer on the effects of rotation, but it targets questions that are essential in such as system’s implementation process. These questions involve the characteristics of the jobs and people, learning, the work group and rotation management.
