Montréal, June 10, 2010 - Thirty-five students from eight Québec universities have been awarded scholarships by the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST) for their research programs aimed at preventing work-related injuries or contributing to the rehabilitation of injured workers. They include eight master’s students, 22 doctoral students, and five postdoctoral fellows. The IRSST’S graduate studies scholarship and postdoctoral fellowship program is intended for applicants at the master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels.
The next generation of researchers
In 2010–2011, the IRSST offered scholarships totalling over $430,000 to promote the studies and research of OHS researchers. The primary objective of this program is to close the current gap between research needs and the number of researchers active in occupational health and safety in Québec. Efforts are also made to attract more students to the Safety of Industrial Tools, Machines, and Processes and Protective Equipment research fields, because there is still a scarcity of new scientific resources in these fields despite pressing research needs.
New features
The program regulations were amended for the 2011-2012 competition. The amount of the postdoctoral fellowship in Québec was increased, a travel indemnity for one return trip per year is offered to recipients whose studies and research program (doctoral and postdoctoral) takes place outside the province, and a special amount is allocated for knowledge transfer and application activities (post-doctoral). In addition, as of this year, the IRSST will be hosting a guest research fellow. Open to holders of a Ph.D from a university outside Québec who wish to do their postdoctoral research in occupational health and safety at the IRSST, this section of the scholarship program seeks mainly to build links with international research teams. The detailed list of scholarship recipients can be consulted on the IRSST’s website:
