Abstract

Load lifting has been associated with musculoskeletal disorders of the lower back, but the question of good postures to be adopted is far from resolved. The author proposes a model for analyzing the loads on the spine caused by tasks in a neutral or bent posture, with or without additional weight. Evaluating spinal efforts during handling tasks will determine several essential factors, such as permissible levels and the safest load limit that can be supported by workers, as well as the optimal postures for reducing the risk of injury and back pain. This research helps to evaluate the distribution of loads between passive and active elements as well as in biological tissues. The data thus collected could subsequently allow the evaluation of physical performances, the optimization of rehabilitation exercises as well as therapeutic operations.
