Abstract

Approximately 200 organophosphates are sold as insecticides and used by thousands of workers in agriculture, horticulture, extermination, forestry, landscape maintenance and other different industries. No method currently exists for estimating the quantity actually absorbed following exposure to these substances. Using modeling and a review of existing data, the authors developed a simple and effective screening tool capable of detecting exposure levels below those causing toxic effects. It is in fact a urine biomarker test that evaluates the quantity of organophosphate actually absorbed by the worker. This publication will be useful for prevention programs, for developing exposure evaluation protocols, and for establishing reentry times after organophosphate exposure.
