Abstract
To plan an underground ventilation network, the person in charge has to estimate several parameters necessary for a simulation. The most important criterion is definitely the friction factor K, namely the quantification of the resistance of the walls of underground openings to the passage of air. The authors developed a factor K database and appended it to mining ventilation software. As a result, people in charge of ventilation in Québec underground mines have a tool for estimating factor K without having to measure it underground, which is a long procedure and requires precise equipment. The database that was created allows rapid estimation of friction factors, thus facilitating ventilation network simulation. Fans or regulators can also be chosen more easily. This tool saves time and promotes more healthy underground workplaces.
