Abstract
Dating from the 1970s, Montréal subway cabs have rudimentary seats that do not attenuate vibration. Two initial studies from a research program have painted a portrait of the health problems of subway operators, described their work, and characterized the whole-body vibrations to which they are exposed. The studies have also led to the development of design criteria for improving their cabs and seats by taking constraints into account, mainly limited space. This third and final project made it possible to select and test a new seat meeting these criteria. To promote an optimal choice, ergonomic and vibration aspects were considered simultaneously during tests in the laboratory and in an actual work situation. At the end of this study, the Société de transport de Montréal (Montréal transit company) now has a seat prototype as well as a summary of the contributions and limits of the proposed modifications relating to the operators' health, safety and performance of their tasks. This summary guided decision-makers in the implementation of the seat. The process developed during this project can be used in other operator cab design projects.
