Abstract
This project evaluated the relation between production processes in this sector and occupational accidents and musculoskeletal injuries, in order to establish preventive measures and future research orientations.
Three categories of information were analyzed: accident reports over a two-year period (722 cases), social and occupational characteristics of the workers (1 651 workers), and results from a questionnaire survey on perceived musculoskeletal pain (1 014 respondents). From this data, researchers were able to define the types of injury, characterize typical industrial processes, workstations and technology, identify operations associated with the greatest number of accidents, establish the social and occupational profile of the working population and its distribution as a function of work activities, and evaluate the working population's experience of musculoskeletal pain.
The study found accidents to be most common in the spinning, twisting, tufting, and dyeing processes. Over half the workers employed in thread production, carpet fabrication, and carpet finishing complained of musculoskeletal pain.
